Boosting Kids’ Immune Systems

Boosting Kids’ Immune Systems

No parent ever wants to see their kid sick. Kids are energetic and active, and when they get sick, they become lethargic and moody. Children aren’t as active as before, and there are several reasons why. A child’s immune system can be weakened if not kept in good shape, and they become more susceptible to illnesses. However, there are several ways that you can boost a child’s immune system to make sure they stay happy and healthy.

Children don’t like vegetables, and it can be a challenge to get kids to eat them. More often than not, a child’s plate will be empty of all but the veggies. However, if parents are assertive enough, and creative enough with serving their children vegetables, their child’s immune system will stay healthy. It is as simple as lessening their diet of sugary foods, and introducing different varieties of vegetables as an alternative. Parents can also sneak veggies into food that children love, and some can even be mixed into healthy desserts, so that kids don’t know that they are getting the nutrients contained in many “icky” vegetables.

Another way of boosting immune systems is through exercise. With video games and television, kids don’t get as much exercise as they should. During school, as well as at home, children sit often and become used to being stationary. The best thing for them is to be active, and there are several ways of getting kids to be eager to exercise. If parents exercise along with their children, kids will be more willing to participate if they see that mom and dad are doing it. It can be as complex as Pilates and Yoga, or as simple as a jog around the yard. Also, video games are becoming more interactive, and with games that encourage moving, kids can have fun and get exercise as well.

It is easy to keep a child healthy, and it is easy to keep yourself healthy as well. By eating a healthy diet and exercising, an immune system can be kept in great shape, and kids can stay happy and healthy. It may take a bit of willpower from both sides, but if parents and children can work together, both will be prepared against illness when it strikes. A few simple adjustments to a family’s lifestyle are all it takes to improve immunity and staying healthy.

Best Foods to Eat When Pregnant

Best Foods to Eat When Pregnant

When it comes to pregnancy, extra care and extra nutrition becomes a vital issue. With so many conflicting guidelines and diet-charts available, and not to mention the added pressures of eating for two, selecting the best foods to eat when pregnant becomes a difficult task. Listed below are 7 such foods, which promote the healthy development of the baby and also help you keep fit and energized.

1. Eggs – Easy Energy!

Eggs, no doubt, have always been number one on the list of the best foods to eat when pregnant. Eggs contain not only more than 12 different vitamins and minerals, but are also packed with protein, which must be a primary component of both, the mothers and the baby’s diet.  Eggs also contain ‘choline’, which helps in brain development and prevents neural tube defects.  Known to be high in cholesterol, they are low in saturated fat, thus balanced consumption is ideal.

2. Veggies – Vital!

Vegetables are the best sources of vitamins and minerals, whether they be fresh, frozen, juiced, boiled or eaten raw (after they have been thoroughly washed of course). Vegetables like spinach and broccoli are loaded with vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, iron and calcium. All these nutrients are essentially required for healthy growth and development. Vegetables are also a rich source of fibers, which help with bowel movement and thus prevent constipation.

3. Salmon – Safe!

Unlike the fishes notoriously know to contain high amounts of adsorbed mercury (mackerel, swordfish, etc), salmon is a low-mercury fish and makes it on the list of the best foods to eat when pregnant. Salmon also has copious amounts of high-quality protein and omega-3-fats, which are important for both, your health and your baby. To be on the safe side, FDA recommends eating not more than 12 ounces of such low-mercury fish per week.

4. Yogurt – Yummy!

Yogurt is a complete diet supplement – calcium, protein, folic acid. It is a perfect nutrient package for a growing baby and its to-be mother. Yogurt also effectively replaces milk for lactose intolerant individuals. It can be consumed with salads, as fruit-smoothies, as a low-calorie substitute for creams and mayonnaise, you name it. Another very important factor is the ‘pro-biotics’ or good active bacteria that are found in yogurt, which promote digestion and prevent stomach infections.

5. Carrots – Crunchy!

Carrots are the ultimate source when it comes to vitamin A, thus they have a special place among the foods to eat when pregnant. Vitamin A is crucial for the proper development of your baby’s bones, eyes and teeth. Carrots are also good sources of vitamin C and B6.  And, last but not the least, they serve as a perfectly healthy snack to munch on whenever you are hungry or bored!

6. Whole grains – Wholesome!

There is a huge and rather rich variety of whole grains that are an excellent choice during pregnancy. They include oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, barley and many more. Surprisingly, popcorn too comes under this heading! Whole grains contain good amounts of vitamin E, which is important in the development of the baby’s immune system, along with fiber and other nutrients. They also contain selenium and phytonutrients, both of which are plant compounds associated with the protection of cells.

7. Nuts – Naturally!

Keeping in mind the importance of minerals in the diet, nuts are the best foods to fulfill their demand. Nuts contain copper, selenium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc, calcium and even vitamin E, thus they are the complete mineral package. The versatility of their use in foods makes them an attractive option during pregnancy.

Doctors have always reminded patients to eat three full meals a day. In addition, they tell you to follow a balanced diet to improve your health. However, as you engage in different activities, the food in your stomach is digested at a faster rate. It would not be surprising if you become hungry in between meals. Although you may not be allowed to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner while doing your job, you can at least satisfy your hunger by munching on light snacks. These delicacies may not be as satisfying as most heavy dishes, but they can provide enough sustenance to help you:

1. Boost productivity

Sweets, in particular, contain lots of sugar, which aid in increasing stamina. As a result, you are able to accomplish tasks faster and more efficiently. The truth is, the nutrients absorbed refuel your body and mind. There are several minerals that can particularly boost bodily and mental functions. Complex carbohydrates, for instance, repair and increase brain cells.

2. Increase Energy

Have you noticed that whenever you are full, you become tired or sleepy? This is because hypocretin and orexin are released. These are hormones in charge of keeping you in a wakeful state. If you eat before lunch or dinner, the food you take boosts your energy.

3. Control Weight

Those of you who are on a diet might think it is unwise to eat snacks at certain periods because it might hinder your weight loss goals. On the contrary, this habit helps you control your appetite. If you refrain yourself from giving in to your cravings, you become more hungry. Once it is time to eat meals, there is a chance that you get to swallow more than what you intended. Thus, if you ever find yourself craving for french fries, go ahead and savour bites of them. Just control the serving size.

4. Receive Better Nutrient Intake

Aside from eating three meals a day, doctors also remind you to take in as much vitamins and minerals. At least if you eat snacks, you can reach the recommended dosage of nutrients daily, especially if you munch on fruits and vegetables.

Lastly, these snacks could also help lower stress levels. But be warned; it is best to regulate the amount of in-between meals that you take so that you do not over indulge. You should also choose foods which are good for you. It would not do you or your work any good if you suddenly have an allergy attack.
